Canada Post has announced a 5-point plan to phase out door-to-door mail delivery in urban areas within the next five years. Since 2008 there has been a 25% drop in mail volumes per household resulting in a major decline in revenue for Canadian Postal Services. With today's access to electronic media for communication, the postal services have been suffering and they believe that community mailboxes are the solution.
The postal workers Union is not pleased and will fight this decision for the many workers whose jobs will be affected. Others fear that this may be the first step towards the elimination of mail services all together to pave way for solely digital communications.
